Uwe E. Reinhardt, Ph.D., James Madison professor of economics and public affairs, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ

Uwe E. Reinhardt earned his Ph.D. in economics at Yale University and holds a number of honorary doctorates. He is currently the James Madison Professor of Political Economy at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1968. His teaching duties have included micro- and macroeconomics, financial management for commercial and not-for-profit enterprises, accounting for commercial, private not-for-profit and government entities, and health economics and policy.  His research interests have centered primarily on health economics and policy, although he has also written on topics in accounting and corporate finance.   Professor Reinhardt has been a consultant to a wide range of business firms and government entities, including the private sector National Leadership Commission on Health Care and the World Bank.  He served for nine years on the Physician Payment Review Commission and, subsequently, on the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Most recently, Uwe has acted as Chair of the New Jersey Governor’s Commission on the Rationalizing of Health Care Resources, whose research and recommendations have focused on the ailing New Jersey hospital sector. Since 178, Professor Reinhardt has been a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences and has served on the IOM’s Governing Council. He has served on a number of boards including, currently, the national Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the Duke University Health System. Uwe has been President of the Association of Health Services Researchers (now Academy Health), the nation’s association of health-services researchers, and currently is the President of the International Economics Association (IHEA).
